Elementals - The core six primal beings

The purpose of this project was to create concept art/illustrations of characters (total of twelve) from a story in order to showcase what they could potentially look like in the story that's being told.

Ideas and Sketches

Like all art projects, my process began with researching the subject matter to get a better idea of what I was dealing with. The next step was brainstorming potential paths of how I could design these characters and once I found what path I was taking , I went to the sketching stage. From here I decided to actually look at various different cultures for inspiration. From Middle-eastern/Eastern influence for the fire and wind elementals, to European for the Light elemental to even aspects of nature/Native American culture for the Water and Earth elementals and even the mysterious origins of the Dark elemental. I wanted to showcase a wide range of diversity and different cultures to show a unique world.

When it came to receiving feedback as well as revisions, it was decided that I should go with the idea of having the elementals in their elemental form have a more natural and confident stance, while in their human form to be in a fighting stance. Afterwards the last thing to decide was what colours to go with for each elemental between keeping it as monochromatic palette (one colour for each) with some gray in both their elemental and human form, or more complimentary colours that work well with each other (ex. Violet and Blue) for both their elemental and human forms.

Final Version

The end result for the elementals was a more primal elemental force for their elemental form and their unique culture background for their human form.
